Read to Know

If only I could motivate more young people to find the absolute joy in reading. It is so encouraging as an elementary library media specialist to see children
who are natural readers asking for advice on what to read next.

Unfortunately they are usually in the minority. Of course, students will read when they have to for a book report or if they are interested in dogs, snakes, eagles or Pluto.

But to read for pleasure is not always a favorite pastime for many children. There is so much competition, especially the electronic kind, for children's attention these days, that the poor book has lost some of its appeal. No longer do children read on car rides, especially when they have DVD players and PSP devices to keep them occupied! Not too many read before bedtime, choosing to fall asleep watcing TV. So sad.

Once in a while, though, I connect with a reluctant reader and recommend a book that he or she absolutely loves, rekindling a reading fire. That is what keeps me motivated to keep finding great books for children and encouraging them to find that spark to help them discover that love of reading.
